Choosing Shutters For Your Home

by Dave Gorski

Having exterior window shutter-style decor (functional or not) on your home is a great way to increase the curb appeal of your home fairly inexpensively. Installing exterior shutters on your home can be a do it yourself weekend project.

They are practical as well as decorative. They can keep out sun, wind, and rain. Nowadays, this type of exterior window treatment plays a bigger role in enhancing the appearance of your house. If you choose vinyl shutters that are in a contrasting color to the vinyl siding of your home, you can complement your homes architecture. Choosing the same or similar shade of shutter actually can make your home larger.

The rays which stream through the shutter will be no longer remembered when the shutter is wholly removed.
—Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

There are various materials that you can choose from to create your this type of exterior window decor. Vinyl has low maintenance and are a very popular choice. They also are easy to install and come in a variety of colors. There are also some made of polywood, which is a composite wood, as well as fiberglass, or even cedar. All of these are fairly simple to install.

They also come in many different styles. The louvered shutter is a classic and works with any type of house. The Bahama style is unique in that it swings up from the bottom to keep shade from the sun. You can also choose from plantation, hurricane, and blackout shutter styles.

When installing them decide first whether you need shutters strictly for appearance or are hoping they will provide protection during rain and wind. This will make a difference in how you install it. There are also some who attempt to match shutter size with each window. Being consistent with shutter sizes will better help you to have a consistent look for the outside of your home.

For shutters that are functional, make sure that you measure properly and install them in about two inches of window depth. It this is not possible, you will have to install external mounts for your shutter.

Although choosing the type of shutter can be overwhelming at times since there are so many types and styles, they are without a doubt a great way to add value and appeal to your home. Choosing a functional shutter gives you shelter from extreme conditions as well. Make sure to choose wisely based upon your needs and your wants for your home.
